What a Tune-Up Actually Includes (And Why You Shouldn't Skip It)
Ask five mechanics what a "tune-up" includes and you might get five different answers. The term dates back to the era of carbureted engines and distributor ignitions, when periodic adjustment of timing, points, and fuel mixture was genuinely necessary for the engine to run properly. Modern fuel-injected engines with electronic ignition systems don't require that kind of adjustment — but the underlying maintenance the tune-up represented is just as important as ever.
This guide explains what a modern tune-up includes, how often your vehicle needs one, and what happens when you delay it too long.
What's Included in a Modern Tune-Up?
A complete tune-up from Rapid Wrench Auto Care typically addresses the following:
Spark plug replacement. Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. Over time, the electrode gap widens, the tip erodes, and combustion becomes less efficient — resulting in reduced power, worse fuel economy, and eventually misfires. Modern iridium and platinum spark plugs last 60,000–100,000 miles, but conventional copper plugs should be changed every 30,000 miles.
Ignition system inspection. This includes checking ignition coils (the components that generate the high-voltage spark), spark plug wires (if applicable), and the ignition module. A failing coil causes a misfire in the cylinder it serves — which can trigger a check engine light and damage the catalytic converter if left unaddressed.
Fuel system service. We inspect the fuel filter and, where applicable, clean the fuel injectors or throttle body. Deposits on the throttle body can cause rough idle and poor response. Clogged injectors result in uneven fuel delivery and misfires.
Belt and hose inspection. The serpentine belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, and water pump. A worn, cracked, or glazed belt that breaks leaves you stranded. Timing belts (on vehicles that have them) are especially critical — failure typically means catastrophic engine damage. We inspect belt condition and note if replacement is approaching.
Air filter inspection and replacement. A restricted engine air filter reduces airflow, hurts throttle response, and can affect fuel trim. We check the condition and replace it if needed.
Multi-point inspection. As part of our tune-up service, our technicians inspect brake pads, fluid levels, lights, tires, and other accessible components — noting anything that needs attention so you can prioritize upcoming maintenance.
How Often Should You Get a Tune-Up?
Service intervals depend heavily on your vehicle's spark plug type:
- Copper spark plugs: Tune-up every 30,000 miles
- Platinum or iridium spark plugs: Tune-up every 60,000–100,000 miles
Check your owner's manual for your specific vehicle's recommendation. If you don't know what type of plugs are in your vehicle or when they were last changed, an inspection will tell you.
Signs You're Overdue for a Tune-Up
- Rough idle or shaking at a stop
- Hesitation or stumbling during acceleration
- Reduced fuel economy over time
- Hard starting — engine cranks longer than it used to before firing
- Check engine light (especially for misfire codes P0300–P0308)
- Engine "pinging" or knocking under load
Delayed tune-ups have a compounding effect. A misfiring cylinder puts stress on the catalytic converter and O2 sensors. A failing ignition coil causes a misfire that triggers a check engine light. Worn spark plugs reduce combustion efficiency and increase fuel consumption. Addressing these items on schedule is significantly cheaper than addressing the downstream consequences of ignoring them.
Multi-Point Inspection: What We Check
Every tune-up service includes a thorough multi-point inspection covering:
- Brake pad thickness and rotor condition
- Tire tread depth and inflation pressure
- All fluid levels (oil, coolant, brake, transmission, power steering)
- Battery condition and terminal corrosion
- Exterior lighting (headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals)
- Visible belts and hoses
- Any accessible suspension components
The Value of Following Your Maintenance Schedule
The biggest misconception about tune-ups is that if the car "seems fine," the work isn't necessary. Most engine wear and efficiency loss happens gradually and isn't immediately noticeable. A vehicle with 80,000 miles on its original spark plugs may run adequately — but it will run better, more efficiently, and more reliably after a tune-up, and the components it's sparing (coils, catalytic converter) will last longer as a result.
